The Rest of Summer 2022

mark

We all missed the last day of school so we could drive straight to Arch Cape, Oregon (just South of Cannon Beach) for the Bagley Family reunion. Enjoying the beach the first day there:

Finding sand dollars:

I spotted a bald eagle relaxing on the beach that first morning. It took flight when I tried to get closer to photograph it:

This is the rock that Arch Cape is named for:

Elly and Ailie on the beach access sidewalk:

Some mussels, anemones, and sea stars on a rock in Arch Cape at low tide:

If you look at the center of this image you can pick out the little crab. They were hard to spot when you looked right at them, but if you held still, you could see them when they moved around between the barnacles:

Riding on shoulders during a morning beach walk:

Sitting on a bench with grandpa in Cannon Beach:

Enjoying the view out the back windows of the house:

I took an early morning hike in the Tillamook National Forest:

This was the actual maiden voyage for the super-wide lens—but you've seen plenty of pictures taken with it at this point from the UK trip and Mt. Whitney:

Plenty of climbing up and down in these mountains though the max elevation was probably only about 3k feet.

At Mo's in Cannon Beach later that day:

Haystack Rock. This is before we took a little wander up above Tillamook Head lighthouse:

The lighthouse out on a bird poo covered rock:

From the top of the hike (didn't have the zoom lens for this shot, just the wide one):

Hug Point State Park at super low tide:

Exploring some caves you can see at low tide:

Three crabs that were about to burrow into the sand because they didn't like us watching:

Petting some anemones:

Lots of sea stars:

Ailie enjoying a peanut butter chocolate milkshake at the Cannon Beach Chocolate café:

Hot chocolate:

Figuring out boogie boarding:

We got the hang of it before it got too cold to continue:

This girl's heart just wants to dance:

And this one can't miss a chance to climb:

The view North from the house on the last night—you can see haystack rock in the distance:

Soaking in the last views of the ocean:

We were home for a few days and then Amanda and I left on our UK trip. These are from a morning hike I did up Deseret Peak the week after we came back:

Now at the Lewis family Reunion. Here are a bunch of us on an early morning hike up to the top of Naomi Peak. Max and Claire:

Tony Grove Lake (at the trailhead):

Ryan, Genevieve, Alissa, Grandpa L., Claire, Peter, Max, and me:

Two intrepid young men:

Almost to the top:

Summit!

I confess, I didn't take many pictures this year—proof that my itchy shutter-finger does wear out (even these were taken by Amanda):

The week after we got back I had a chance to hike and so I went for one I've longed to do for a while. This is Lone Peak. This is about halfway up, looking South into Utah County:

The Lone Peak cirque looms ahead. It is a little unreal. It's barren desert Utah mountain face for a long time and then suddenly you come over this rise and you get this alpine zone that's quite lovely:

Salt Lake Valley on the right, the edge of Utah Valley on the left while crossing the cirque to the summit:

Picture taken by a new friend I met about 100 yards from the summit:

Summit!

Utah County:

Mount Timpanogos to the South:

I took another hike to Lowe Peak in the Oquirrh Mountains to prep for Mt. Whitney. This is from Butterfield Peak—I'm going to circle the ridge from here around the bowl to the tallest looking thing near the center of the image:

Lovely green and flowers pretty much the whole way:

I'll have to cross over some of the peaks that tower over south Tooele along the way:

Lowe Peak up ahead drawing ever nearer:

One last slope to climb!

Almost to the summit—a dilapidated radio tower and shack:

A flag someone had placed on top of the flagpole a few days before (they said so in the register—this person was also surnamed Lewis):

A wristband reading "Lewis Strong" left by whoever swapped out the flag:

Tooele visible down below as I make the journey back:

We got some crazy rainy days in July/August. Here's the kids having fun in a full gutter:

And now riding the Heber Creeper (the kids won some free tickets in a library raffle):

Cute creature:

Ailie looking especially Lewis-y. And old. ❤️ Her hands are so big when she holds my hand now 😭:

View from the train as we head back to the station:

Max and I went camping in the Stansbury Mountains at the very end of Summer. On a nice morning, we headed up to Deseret Peak:

Mushrooms!

Taking a break before heading to the summit:

Putting on a brave face, but feeling a little nervous (I think he thought we were going to be scaling the cliff behind him to reach the top):

Almost there1

Signing the summit register with cold hands:

Soaking our feet in the stream on the way down. Max reasoned that this stream must surely lead back to our campsite (which was next to a dry riverbed), so we followed it down. Sure enough, he was right!

Amanda and everyone else came up to have dinner with us at our campsite that night. They left Callum to spend the night, which was fun. Here they are snacking before bed:

We got rained out the next morning, but it was still a great boys outing!
